Scrapbooking which is as old as time itself is the crafting and documenting of activities which involves adding photos to books.

It may also include the addition of photos, memorabilia, embellishments and journaling.

One of the main reasons people keep a scrapbook is to preserve memories for future generations. Other people keep a scrapbook to exercise their creativity while displaying pictures in the scrapbook. Although these days, scrapbooks are filled only with pictures, in the past, they were usually a collection of recipes, greeting cards, tickets, playbills, memorabilia, etc.

Elements of a Great Scrapbook

Keeping scrapbooks today is popular because it lets people document and chronicle their lives while they go about their normal lives. In the U.S. today, over 4 million women practise the habit of scrapbooking. Outlined below are key elements you need to make a great scrapbook.

  • Theme

Decide on what you want your scrapbook to be about and plan accordingly. Having a theme will help you picture the type of pages you want to create, and makes it easier to get scrapbook supplies.

  • Photo

After deciding on a theme, start gathering photos. A scrapbook without photos is very boring, and won’t hold any sentimental value. Gather everyday photos, as well as photos that capture milestones such as graduation, anniversaries, birthdays, etc.

  • Journaling

If you feel so inclined, you can attach a caption or short story behind every picture so anyone that goes through it can have some background information. It can just be a few lines describing the photo.

  • Embellishments

You can add glitz to your pages such as ribbons, glitter etc to spice up your scrapbook. While embellishments might add spice to your scrapbook, it is important to keep it minimal.
