Which do you prefer large brand name cosmetics, health and beauty aids, etc. or those made by small business craftspeople with a love or passion for their work?

This may sound simple depending which one you prefer, but there are some practical considerations. Large brands benefit from availability in large and small retailers, economy of scale to keep the prices down, and years of research and development to get the right formula.

There are also specialists out there that need either hypo-allergenic products for health reasons or a very specific product due to their unique situation.

Small producers can offer products that cater to particular niches, but it depends on the skill and knowledge available to the small company or its partners. Capacity can also vary depending on the supply chain network that the small producer may use if the outsource fabrication to an outside company that will generate products that match the specifications or ingredients.

In terms of price, small businesses may be more expensive, but they may not be burdened by R&D, marketing, and corporate costs. And because they specialize in this niche market and are not generally able to outcompete on price, small businesses are able to make up inefficiencies with customer service and a personal touch.

It really comes down to the needs of the customer in this situation. So which one do you prefer? What are your thoughts on this topic?
