Calligraphy is a form of visual art related to writing, it involves the design of lettering with brush or broad tipped instrument. This style of writing was first developed in the Ottoman Empire where inscriptions were designed to form expressions. Calligraphy is achieved with water based ink and several shapes of pen to produce symmetrical, sequential and systematic lines.
However, in the contemporary world, calligraphy has now transformed into a skillful art of giving numerous forms of signs, it is now used as designs on fine arts pieces and functional inscriptions. The real form of calligraphy has diminished in popularity especially with the emergence of technology which has eased to burden of having to use the pen most of the time, now, people prefer to mane notes in the iPhones, tablets and android where it can be kept safely than scribing things down in an artful for because the latter is faster and saves time. The fact that software andcomputers can replicate all forms of calligraphy in a faster and more cost effective manner has also relegated the form of writing to the background. Calligraphy is now mostly only seen in electronic font designs. The art of calligraphy is now saved only for special occasions such as wedding cards and other forms of invitations.
Despite the influences of the digital age, some people have not allowed their love for penmanship be swept aside in favor of digital gadgets that can do that for them. Several people find calligraphy as a unique form of art and an interesting way to communicate.
While calligraphy has become unpopular, its significant role in penmanship cannot be over emphasized, which is why many schools implement one form ofcalligraphy or the other in elementary schools. Practicing calligraphy could be the key to encouraging effective learning amongst teenagers in school and sharpen their thoughts. Because calligraphy is highly synonymous to great penmanship, calligraphy should be encouraged to help deal with the problem of literacy that seems to be bothering the world right now.
Psychologically, cursive writing such as calligraphy helps to establish a unique relationship between the hand and the brain, hence helping to sharpen ideas and thoughts easily. Encouraging calligraphy is one of the best ways to sharpen young minds, like going for music lessons, calligraphy sharpens the mind and trains the thoughts, it is also cheaper than a piano lesson and very effective.
While calligraphy seems to have lost its foot hold, there is no denying its significance in sharpening the mind and thoughts which is why it should be encouraged and practiced.
